Poundland has been put up for sale just over a year after being acquired for £1, with its current owner reportedly hoping to secure a new buyer ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.
The development is likely to be of interest to shoppers in Enniskillen, where Poundland operates a store inside Erneside Shopping Centre.
However, there is currently no suggestion that the Enniskillen store is set to close, and the sale process relates to the ownership of the wider Poundland business rather than individual branches.
According to Sky News, Gordon Brothers has appointed restructuring and advisory firm Alvarez & Marsal to oversee a formal auction of the discount retailer, with the process beginning on Wednesday 2nd September.
It is understood that the aim is to complete a sale before the end of October, putting new ownership in place ahead of the important Christmas shopping period.
Initial bids are reportedly expected in early October, while Gordon Brothers is said to have already received unsolicited approaches for the business. Retail investor Modella Capital, which owns TGJones and Hobbycraft, has been named among the potential bidders.
Poundland has undergone major changes
The latest development comes little more than a year after Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland for just £1 in June 2025.
Since then, the retailer has undergone a significant restructuring programme as attempts have been made to stabilise the business and return it to profitability.
This has included the closure of more than 100 stores, while Poundland has also simplified its product range and returned to a greater emphasis on £1, £2 and £3 price points.
Sky News reports that Poundland currently operates around 600 stores across the UK and employs approximately 12,000 people. Sources close to the company have also claimed that the retailer has returned to profitability on an EBITDA basis during 2026.
A Poundland spokesperson told Retail Gazette that the company would remain focused on its recovery, highlighting lower prices, new ranges and improved service as key parts of its strategy.
What does this mean for Poundland Enniskillen?
For now, there has been no announcement of any change affecting Poundland’s Enniskillen store at Erneside Shopping Centre.
Putting the overall Poundland business up for sale does not mean that its individual stores are automatically closing, and the current process is focused on finding a new owner for the chain.
Nevertheless, after a period which has already seen significant restructuring and store closures across the UK, the identity of Poundland’s next owner — and their plans for the retailer — will be closely watched.
For Enniskillen shoppers, it means the local Poundland continues trading as normal based on the information currently available, while the future ownership of one of Britain’s biggest discount retailers is decided.
Enniskillen Mix will keep an eye on developments and provide an update if anything affecting the Enniskillen store is announced.
