Australia Bans Social Media for Under 16s – Should the UK Do the Same?

Australia is about to make a major move that could change how young people use the internet — the country is introducing a nationwide ban on social media for anyone under the age of 16.

What’s Happening?

From 10th December 2025, children and teenagers under 16 in Australia will no longer be allowed to create or use accounts on major social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Reddit, and others.

This new rule is part of an official government move to protect young people online. The aim is to reduce exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and the pressures that often come with life on social media.

Importantly, the ban places responsibility on the platforms themselves — not on parents or the children. Social media companies could face massive fines if they don’t do enough to block underage users or properly verify people’s ages before letting them sign up.

Why Are They Doing This?

The Australian government says there is growing evidence that constant use of social media is having a negative impact on young people’s mental health, wellbeing, and overall development. Concerns have also been raised about how addictive these apps can be, the way they promote unrealistic expectations, and the lack of control around what content children are exposed to.

There’s also the issue of privacy and safety — with many underage users sharing personal information without fully understanding the risks.

By enforcing a legal age limit, the government hopes to create a safer, healthier environment for young people to grow up in, both online and offline.

What About the UK?

This new move in Australia has sparked discussion globally — especially in places like the UK where similar concerns exist. Some people feel it’s time for tougher rules, while others argue that bans like this may be hard to enforce and could restrict children’s freedom to learn and connect online.
