Enniskillen Library will close its doors this weekend as work prepares to get underway on the major redevelopment of the Halls Lane building.

The library’s final day of opening will be Saturday 19th September, before it closes to the public from Monday 21st September 2026.

Libraries NI has confirmed that a contractor has now been appointed and work will soon commence on what it describes as a new, modern library for Enniskillen and the wider community.

The closure is expected to last throughout the redevelopment, but alternative services are being put in place for library users in Enniskillen and across Fermanagh.

What’s happening this weekend?

Enniskillen Library will remain open as normal until the end of Saturday 19th September.

Libraries NI has confirmed that all events and activities already planned for Saturday will still go ahead as scheduled.

The library will then close from Monday to allow redevelopment work to begin.

Mobile library service coming to Enniskillen

While a temporary library is being arranged, a mobile library service will operate in Enniskillen from Monday to Friday between 3pm and 4pm.

It will be located at Cornagrade Road Car Park, opposite the Kilmacormick Road junction.

Additional opening hours are also being introduced at Lisnaskea and Irvinestown libraries from Monday 21st September, giving customers more opportunities to access library services elsewhere in Fermanagh.

Library members aren’t restricted to those branches, however, and can continue to borrow and return items at any Libraries NI library across Northern Ireland.

Online services, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers, will also remain available.

Temporary Enniskillen Library planned

Libraries NI is currently working to secure premises for a temporary library in Enniskillen while the redevelopment takes place.

A location has not yet been announced, but the organisation says it anticipates opening the temporary facility in late autumn 2026, with further details to be released once arrangements have been finalised.

That means the mobile library will provide a local service in the meantime.

What happens to Enniskillen’s heritage collection?

Arrangements have also been made to maintain access to Enniskillen Library’s important local heritage resources.

From Thursday 1st October, heritage material will be available at Lisnaskea Library, where microfilm readers and printers will be available during normal opening hours.

Material from the Fermanagh Collection, including maps, information packs and bound newspaper volumes, will be available through a retrieval service, with Lisnaskea Library staff able to assist with heritage enquiries.

Major redevelopment moves forward

The closure marks one of the most significant stages yet in the long-planned redevelopment of Enniskillen Library.

Concept drawings released for the project show a dramatically transformed building, with a modern glazed upper section forming a prominent part of the proposed new design.

Libraries NI Chief Executive Jim O’Hagan said the closure was a necessary step in moving the redevelopment forward and acknowledged that it would mean a period of change for customers.

He said Libraries NI was working to establish temporary provision in Enniskillen and hoped the additional opening hours elsewhere in Fermanagh would help people continue accessing library services during the closure.

Libraries NI says further updates on the temporary facility and redevelopment will be announced as plans progress.
